Top seed girl players advance to quarterfinals of Pakistan Junior C’ships
ISLAMABAD: All the top seeds moved to the quarterfinals of of Girls’ Singles of Tajammul & Dilawar Abbas Memorial ITF Pakistan Junior Tennis Championships 2020 at Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) Tennis Complex, Islamabad on Tuesday. Lone Pakistani girl Zoha Asim registered her victory in the first round against Sie Ding Chai of Malaysia in a three-set seesaw battle. Zoha got off a flying start as she took an early lead 2-1 in the first set. But she was unable to maintain the lead and Chai leveled the match 4-4all. However, Zoha again built up the lead by holding her 9th game and broke the 11th game of her opponent to win the first set at 6-4. Chai won the second set by breaking 4th, 6th and 8th game of Zoha and leveled the match 1 set all. Zoha hit six double faults in the second set. She, once again exhibited great agility and skills and won the final set at 6-2 by breaking 1st, 3rd and 7th game of Chai. The most thrilling encounter of the day was held between Dorsa Gherghai (Iran) and Leyla Nilufer Elmas (Turkmenistan), which was won by the latter after a two-hour and 34 minutes grueling fight. In Boys’ Singles, Pakistan’s Subhan Bin Salik caused major upset of the tournament as he eliminated third seed Matteo Covato of Italy in a hard fought fixture and moved into the quarterfinal. Another promising Pakistan player Muhammad Shoaib also won his fixture against Romania’s Iustin Belea 6-3, 6-0 In Boys’ Doubles, unseeded Turkish pair of Duran and Kerem Ozlale caused the major upset when they swatted aside third seed Nikita Bortinichek (Russia) and Haktan Garayev (Azerbaijan) in an excited three-set match 7-6(2), 3-6, 10-7.
