PESHAWAR: The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said that the country has granted asylum to 26 Afghan women judges, prosecutors and their families.
This is the first time that so many female judges and prosecutors have been reported in a country since the Taliban takeover on 15 August. A few days ago, it was reported that more than 200 judges are hiding due to security concerns in Afghanistan.

The judges said that during the Ashraf Ghani administration, hundreds of people had been convicted of rape, torture and killing women, but the convicts have been released after the Taliban takeover. They judges said that they are now receiving threats of dire consequences from the convicts.
A few years ago, Greece was a major refugee route to Europe for Afghans, Syrians, Iraqis and other countries, but now Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made it clear that he no longer allow Greece to become a refugees’ gateway to Europe .He told reporters after the opening of a new refugee camp that his country was no longer ready to accept refugees. He called on European countries to work with Afghanistan’s neighbors to keep Afghan refugees in the region.
European countries and Afghanistan’s neighbors fear that the return of the Taliban, Afghanistan could trigger another wave of migration. Thousands of Afghans are still living in camps in several countries, including in Greece and Turkey in a bid to enter European countries. The refugees said they face many problems and are deprived of basic necessities of life.
As Greece grants asylum to women judges and prosecutors, the Afghan girls national soccer team have taken refuge in Portugal. The players and their families were evacuated from Afghanistan through a charter plane by the United States. The players said that after the US withdrawal, the lives of girl players and their families were in danger. However, the Taliban said that there is no threat to anyone. The group has not yet issued complete ban on women’s participation in sports.
