PESHAWAR: The Troika plus summit attended by representatives from China, Pakistan, Russia and the United States is underway in Islamabad to review the security and economic situation in Afghanistan.
In his inaugural address, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi called on the global community to help Afghanistan on emergency basis to avert the lingering humanitarian crisis in the country. He also reiterated the United Nations’ appeal for financial assistance for Afghans. Qureshi said, “the common man in Afghanistan is facing severe difficulties.”

Talking to media in Islamabad after his address, Qureshi said that the Taliban will be invited to attend the next meeting in Beijing. He advised the world to learn from history and help to steer out the Taliban-led Afghanistan from the current crisis. Qureshi said that a 20-member delegation led by Afghan Foreign Minister has already arrived in Pakistan and will meet high officials in Pakistan.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the meeting will take stock of the current situation in Afghanistan and consider the future course of action for a peaceful, united, stable, independent and prosperous Afghanistan. Representatives of China, Russian Federation, USA and Pakistan for Afghanistan are in Islamabad for troika plus summit. The Foreign Ministry hoped that the Troika Plus Summit will be instrumental in the ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace and security in Afghanistan. “Various issues including boosting trade, facilitation of trade corridors, border transport, promotion of land, air and public relations will be discussed with the visiting Afghan delegation,” the foreign minister said.
In light of the current situation, Pakistan has been urging the international community to ensure the provision of humanitarian and financial assistance on an emergency basis to address the plight of the Afghan people. According to the Foreign Ministry spokesman, Pakistan is committed to supporting a peaceful, stable, independent and prosperous Afghanistan.
