PESHAWAR: The Interior Ministry on Thursday approved foolproof security for Chief Justice (retd) Gulzar Ahmed.
The notification said that a security squad comprising of Rangers and police team will be deployed at his residence. Before his retired on 27 January, the Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice had demanded the government to maintain his security protocol. In a letter to Home Ministry, He said that as a judge he has decided many sensitive cases including terrorism, extrajudicial killings, minority rights and encroachments. He said in his letter that the security as the Chief Justice should be maintained for him and his family. He had also asked for the deployment of Rangers at his residence.

After his retirement on 1 February, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, the senior most judge of Supreme Court was sworn in as 28th Chief Justice of Pakistan on 2 February. The oath-taking ceremony was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr where President Arif Alvi administered oath to Justice Bandial. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Imran Khan, federal ministers, judges of the Supreme Court, as well as chiefs of the armed forces and important personalities, including lawyers.
Justice Gulzar Ahmed retired from his post on February 1, 2022 after serving as the 27th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan for two years and one month. Justice Gulzar, who took the oath of office on December 4, 2019, added a new chapter to Pakistan’s judicial history in the last month as Chief Justice when he administered the oath of office to Justice Ayesha A Malik, the first woman judge of the Supreme Court.
Another important event in the tenure of Justice Gulzar Ahmed was the summoning of a Prime Minister to the Supreme Court after a gap of 10 years. He had summoned Imran Khan in person in a suo motu notice in the Army Public School attack case. Apart from this, if one looks at his nearly two-year tenure as Chief Justice, he was focused on cases and issues related to Karachi’s problems and elimination of encroachments.
