PESHAWAR: Just days after Prime Minister Iman Khan’s announcement to reduce fuel prices to curb inflation, Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has recommended an average 16.37% hike in gas tariff.
OGRA has sent the summary to federal government for approval. The decision on OGRA’s recommendation will be taken by the federal government after which OGRA will issue its formal notification.

The summary shows that OGRA has sought to increase the average gas price for Sui Northern by 16.37% and for Sui Southern by 6.35%. Approval was given to increase the price of gas for Sui Northern by Rs94 per MMBTU and for Rs50 per MMBTU for Sui Southern gas Pipeline Company.
According to OGRA, the gas companies had submitted applications for 2021-22.
On February 28, Just hours ahead of the prime minister’ announcement to reduce petrol prices, the Oil and Gas Regulator Authority (OGRA) notified Rs27 per kilogram hike in LPG [liquefied Natural Gas]. After the hike, per kg price of the commodity has increased to Rs233.78 across Pakistan. The notification said the new LPG prices will be applicable from 1 March [today].
Prime Minister Imran Khan said that government will provide more relief to public against high inflation and urged the PTI leadership to expedite efforts for Local Government (LG) elections in Punjab. During his meeting with PTI Punjab leadership, he directed to effectively propagate the government relief measures against inflation throughout the province to get peoples’ support for election. The LG election in Punjab is scheduled in May, this year.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan welcomed PM’s announcement to reduce fuel prices and hoped that the prices will be further slashed in near future to tackle high inflation. The chief minister said that despite “extremely difficult situation”, the Prime Minister has announced a “historic” relief which will directly benefit common men. Khan announced that in the coming days the government will take more such relief measures to restore peoples’ confidence in government policies.
Yesterday, the government ally PML-Q welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of reduction in petrol and electricity prices. They also agreed to support the government against the opposition no confidence motion after the PM’s measures to curb inflation.
