PESHAWAR: It has been decided to scrap aging transport vehicles plying along the BRT route and concerned departments have been directed to purge the city from such vehicles within a week.
Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud gave one week deadline to Trans-Peshawar, District Administration, Peshawar Development Authority (PDA), Transport Department and Traffic Police for complete eradication of buses along the BRT route to control traffic issues of the city.

Weekly holidays of Trans Peshawar, District Administration, PDA, Transport Department and Traffic Police have been cancelled for scrapping the remaining 264 buses and wagons on BRT route. The owners have been asked to handover buses and wagons to the administration. It has been decided to provide compensation to the owners through one-window operation to scrape the buses as soon as possible.
Briefing in the meeting, Trans Peshawar officials informed that total of 409 buses plying on BRT route have been taken into custody and scrapped while the owners of these buses have also been paid compensation. The officials said that 264 old vehicles and wagons still operate on Peshawar’s roads. Due to severe traffic problems on University Road and GT Road, Commissioner Peshawar Division ordered that there should be no old depilated bus on the city roads.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has earlier banned old buses and wagons on the BRT [Bus rapid transit] route and had set a deadline of January 20 but the order could not be implemented.
The transport department has issued a notification banning old mazda bus and wagon, saying that is one of the major sources of pollution in the city. The department said that the last date to handover the old vehicles to the government has been extended to January 20. The owners of old buses and wagon would be paid compensation according to the prescribed formula, the notification had said.
