A heart-rending tragedy occurred on the campus of Buner University on the seventh of June.
The university is located on Pir Baba Road, Sowari. According to the available details, a female student of BS (English) was bottle-feeding her infant child in the generator room.
Due to the toxic smoke and fumes of the generator, the mother and the child felt asphyxiated and died on the spot. The female victim happened to be the daughter-in-law of the former provincial minister Habibur Rahman Khan.
On receiving the tragic news, the fellow students assembled on the campus to show solidarity with the victim. They staged a protest demonstration and blamed the tragedy on lack of facilities. They said that the mother and child had initially fallen unconscious due to the smoke. If they had been promptly shifted to a hospital, they would most likely have been alive today. Since no such attempt was made, the tragedy was bound to occur.
The students demanded an end to load-shedding, the provision of clean drinking water and, most importantly, the completion of the university building. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Amin Badshah, was not available for any comment on the incident. However, in view of the death of a female student along with her infant child and the subsequent protest demonstrations by students, the Registrar announced the immediate closure of the university. In the event of horrible human disasters, the most convenient way before the administration is to close down the university, which implies a dual loss to students in terms of studies.
