Germany plans to become the first European country to legalize cannabis for recreational purposes.
Germany has announced plans regarding the legalization of cannabis. Germany will likely become the first country in Europe to legalize the use of psychoactive drug from cannabis plants, for recreational purposes.
Cannabis is already legalized in many countries of Europe, including Germany, for medical purposes. The Health Minister now aims to regulate the distribution and consumption of cannabis for recreational purposes among adults.
German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach presented his plans to Chancellor Olaf Schulz’s cabinet. Lauterbach stated that the aim is to regulate the cannabis market with the most freedom in Europe.
Germany’s federal cabinet has reportedly approved the plan. The federal cabinet has started the long process of drafting legislation to legalize the cultivation and distribution of cannabis.
Health Minister Lauterbach explained that as a possible model for other European countries, Germany would have to follow the European legislative procedure for its laws. The minister further stated that under the proposed plan, the government-controlled legal market will regulate the production, sale and distribution of cannabis plants.
