129 Afghan women have been detained in Pakistan along with their children after they illegally barged into the premises of Pakistan. According to the Information Minister Sindh, 129 women Afghan nationals are currently imprisoned in Karachi’s Women’s Jail.
The women are sentenced to 2 months imprisonment after they illegally entered the southern port of Karachi without valid travel documents.
Moreover, women are not alone in jail. These illegal immigrants also have 178 children with them. According to the law in Pakistan, children under 7 years of age remain with their mothers in prison.
The detentions have further underscored the strained relations between the two South Asian neighbors. Pictures of the Afghan children crammed into a cell of the central jail in Karachi circulated on social media, drawing appeals for their release along with their parents. The images have brought criticism from around Afghanistan.
Abdul Qahar Balkhi, a spokesman for the foreign affairs ministry, has discussed the matter stating, “We believe that such degrading treatment of Afghans in Pakistan is not in the interest of any party. Afghans were advised not to enter Pakistan unless necessary and without proper documentation.”
Of all the things in the world, this is the least that a child deserves. The sufferers of the dispute over land, power, money, and egos are never the one who creates them.
