For various reasons, more than a dozen different species of birds have disappeared from Peshawar. On the contrary, the number of carnivorous birds is increasing day by day.
For instance, eagles and crows are hovering in the skies, because the birds in urban and suburban areas have migrated to other areas.
Until recently, sparrows, quail, wild pigeons, nightingales, parrots, owls, and sugar eaters were commonly caught sight of in the city. However, over the years, residential colonies have been established in the gardens where the birds make nests in the trees. New trees are planted in place of the old trees that were familiar to the birds. The newly planted trees are not known to local birds.
Besides, the old trees that are left are occupied by eagles and crows. These birds also attack the nests of the small birds, eventually killing them. Moreover, thousands of wild pigeons have been petted by people in the city, which is harmful to the environment and atmosphere.
The disappearance of birds has resulted in different types of diseases. The pests in crops are increasing. Due to the cessation of natural methods, farmers are bound to use pesticides on crops.
Pesticides are poisons and they can harm more than just the pests at which they are targeted. They are toxic, and exposure to pesticides can cause several health effects. They are linked to a range of serious illnesses and diseases from respiratory problems to cancer.
