The monitoring board of Meta, the company that owns Instagram and Facebook, has ruled out deleting indecent photos of transgender users while reviewing its nudity policy.
According to the global news agency, Meta Company has removed nude pictures of the breasts of two transgender users on Instagram.
The board also spoke to transgender users whose images had been removed and reviewed the objections raised to the images and issued a policy statement that has drawn much criticism.
Surprisingly, in ruling in favor of the Instagram posts that were removed, the board wrote that the images did not violate Meta’s policies and therefore the board overturned the Meta company’s decision to remove them. .
The decision states that under the current policy, only topless images of women can be removed except in certain circumstances, including uploading images of breastfeeding and gender confirmation surgery.
A Meta spokesperson welcomed the board’s move to reinstate the deleted images, but also that Meta has decided to make its broader policies on nudity more comprehensive in the company context.
“We are constantly reviewing our policies to make our platforms (WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook) safer for everyone,” a Meta company spokesperson added.
A company spokesperson also indicated that we are also looking at what more can be done to support the transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community. The Meta Company’s statement has been applauded by homosexual organizations.
