Callingng Adhan has become a crime under Modi’s government in India. In the Indian state of Uttarakhand, 7 mosques have been ordered to pay a fine of five thousand rupees each for calling Adhan over a loudspeaker.
According to Indian media, the High Court in Haridwar region of Uttarakhand State imposed a fine on Jama Masjid Haridwar, Ibadullah Hatla (Kikarwalli) Masjid, Bilal Masjid, Sabri Jama Masjid and 3 other mosques for calling the adhan over loud speakers.
The administration of mosques has been ordered to pay a fine of five thousand per mosque. This action was taken on behalf of SDM Puran Singh Rana. The complaint against these seven mosques had been filed by the local BJP leaders.
It may be noted that in Uttarakhand, a minimum level of volume has been fixed for the call for prayers. Leaders of Modi’s party had alleged that these mosques violated the prescribed volume limit. According to them loud adhans on loudspeakers disturbs the comfort of elderly and sick citizens.
On the contrary, Muslim scholar Muhammad Arif stated in a meeting that they have kept the volume low. They see no harm in it. However, the noise is not from the call to prayer, but from weddings, singing, car horns etc.
The Muslim scholar further said that the police apply the law only to mosques while leaving others alone.
