In a remarkable archaeological breakthrough, authorities in Egypt have revealed the astonishing discovery of ancient workshops and tombs at the majestic pharaonic necropolis near Cairo. This captivating site in Saqqara, part of the illustrious ancient capital of Memphis, has unveiled a treasure trove of artifacts dating back an astounding 4,000 years.
Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri, announced the unearthing of the largest embalming workshops ever found, one dedicated to humans and the other to sacred animals. The workshops, dating back to the 30th pharaonic dynasty and the Ptolemaic period, provided unprecedented insights into the mystical mummification process.
Inside the animal embalming workshop, adorned with mud and stone floors, archaeologists discovered bronze tools crucial to the mummification rituals. They also found five perfectly preserved stone beds, which were used to mummify the most revered animals. The tombs, adorned with captivating scenes of daily life, cultivation, and harvest, revealed the vivid narratives of the fifth dynasty and the 18th dynasty. Notably, the tomb of “Ne Hesut Ba,” an esteemed scribe and priest, and the tomb of “Men Kheber,” a respected Qadish priest, provided remarkable glimpses into the lives and beliefs of ancient Egyptian society.
Among the extraordinary findings were Old Kingdom tombs, meticulously painted with the names of the deceased and their spouses, while New Kingdom tombs showcased impeccably intact alabaster statues of their owners, adorned with mesmerizing hieroglyphic texts in vibrant blue.
This groundbreaking excavation builds upon previous discoveries at the Saqqara necropolis, where ceramic vessels recently shed light on the intricate mummification techniques of ancient Egyptians. Analysis of chemical residues found within the jars unveiled the precise mixtures of fragrant oils, antiseptic substances, and resins used in the preservation process. Furthermore, inscriptions on the containers divulged the use of specific materials such as dammar tree resin and elemi oil, indigenous to rainforests in Asia and Africa.
Egypt’s government, seeking to revive its tourism industry following political upheaval, has actively shared these captivating archaeological finds with the world.
