In a bid to preserve the sociocultural values and Islamic identity of the country, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) has imposed a ban on Holi celebrations across all educational institutes. This decision follows the circulation of pictures and videos from a viral Holi celebration at Quaid-I-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad.
The HEC notification emphasizes the importance of adhering to sociocultural values while promoting diversity and tolerance. It acknowledges that cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity contributes to an inclusive society that respects all faiths and creeds. However, the commission also urges students to exercise restraint and avoid going to extremes in their celebrations. It cautions against falling prey to self-serving interests that manipulate them, steering them away from the ideals of critical thinking and altruism.
The “biggest Holi celebration in Pakistan” held at QAU received both acclaim and criticism from various quarters. The ban imposed by the HEC aims to strike a balance between cultural expression and preserving the essence of the country’s values.
