The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is closely following the developments in Pakistan after the general elections, his spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN chief, told reporters that Guterres appealed to all parties to resolve any disputes through the legal channels and to uphold human rights and the rule of law for the sake of the Pakistani people.
Guterres also called on the authorities and political leaders to refrain from any actions that could escalate or provoke violence and to maintain a peaceful environment in the country, Dujarric added.
The general elections in Pakistan were held on Monday amid allegations of rigging and violence. The preliminary results showed that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former cricket star Imran Khan, emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly, but fell short of a majority. The main opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), rejected the results and claimed that the election was “stolen” from them.
