As the annual Hajj pilgrimage approaches, over two million pilgrims are set to face severe heat in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Meteorological Department has issued a stern warning, prompting the government to focus on extensive measures to mitigate the impact of the sweltering temperatures.

Eiman Ghulam, head of the Saudi National Center for Meteorology, spoke with local media about the challenges posed by the summer heat. “Hajj will coincide with June this year, a period notorious for extreme heat and high humidity,” he explained. “We recently held a workshop to discuss the potential effects of this heatwave on the pilgrims.”

Ghulam emphasized that ensuring the well-being of the pilgrims is paramount. “We’ve reviewed the logistical aspects of food and drink provisions within the pilgrim camps,” he said. “It is crucial for the relevant authorities to be fully informed about weather conditions so they can take timely and effective measures.”

Saudi Arabia is expected to host over two million pilgrims this year. Given the extreme temperatures, providing adequate facilities and ensuring the safety of the pilgrims is a top priority for the Saudi government. “We are on high alert and are mobilizing resources to offer maximum support to the pilgrims,” Ghulam reassured.

Reflecting on the recent influx of worshippers during Ramadan, he noted, “Approximately 30 million people performed Umrah during Ramadan. Based on this influx, we anticipate that the number of Hajj pilgrims this year will exceed two million.”

In response to the forecasted heat, Saudi authorities are taking unprecedented steps. Cooling technologies, ample hydration stations, and shaded rest areas are being set up to help mitigate heat-related risks. Medical teams will be on standby to address any heat-related health issues promptly.
