Chaos erupted in the Punjab Assembly as opposition members staged a walkout, demanding the presence of the Inspector General (IG) of Punjab Police to address allegations of police misconduct.*
The session of the Punjab Assembly commenced amid loud protests from opposition members. The opposition, led by members such as Rana Aftab and Rana Shahbaz, voiced their outrage against the ongoing police actions they deemed as terroristic and oppressive. Rana Aftab, addressing the assembly, declared that unless the alleged terrorism against them ceased, they would not participate in the proceedings. He insisted that the IG Punjab be summoned to the House for an explanation.
Rana Shahbaz added fuel to the fire by accusing the police of theft, claiming they had stolen jewelry from homes. The interim Speaker responded by ordering the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs to enter the House. Despite these efforts, the opposition stood firm, chanting slogans against what they called “thuggery” and the “government of batons and bullets.”
During the question hour, opposition members gathered around the Speaker’s dais, raising slogans and ultimately walking out of the assembly. Rana Aftab, expressing his thoughts during a point of order, said that the atmosphere of terror had become so intense that even breathing had become difficult for them. He warned that if the sanctity of their private spaces was violated, the ruling members would also be at risk. He threatened to obstruct the proceedings if the government continued to suppress their voices.
Rana Shahbaz, speaking on the same matter, insisted that for the first time in history, the police were engaging in such blatant acts of theft and oppression. He demanded that both the Chief Minister and the IG Punjab be summoned to the House to answer for these actions. Following the uproar, the interim Speaker adjourned the session for ten minutes.
