Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), a region renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and towering peaks, has been featured in CNN Travel’s list of the top 25 destinations to visit in 2025.
CNN Travel highlighted GB’s allure, stating, “The Gilgit-Baltistan region in the Karakoram Mountains isn’t the easiest place to get to… but it has more tantalising peaks than a lemon meringue pie.” The region boasts five of the world’s 14 “eight-thousander” peaks, including K2, the second-highest mountain globally and considered one of the most challenging to summit.
In 2024, GB experienced a surge in adventure tourism, with over 1,700 foreign climbers applying for permits to scale its peaks. Notably, 175 of these climbers aimed to conquer K2 during the summer season. This uptick in interest underscores the region’s growing appeal among international mountaineers.
The Pakistani government has recognized this potential and announced plans to establish a world-class mountaineering school in GB. The initiative aims to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly climbing practices, equip aspiring mountaineers with essential skills, and create employment opportunities for local communities.
While the region offers unparalleled trekking and climbing experiences, CNN Travel advises that traveling alone is not recommended due to the challenging terrain and logistical considerations. Prospective visitors are encouraged to plan their trips with experienced guides to fully appreciate the majestic beauty and cultural richness of Gilgit-Baltistan.
