In a recent discussion on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recounted a significant legal challenge he faced in Pakistan over blasphemy allegations.
He described how, in 2010, a “Draw Muhammad” contest hosted on Facebook led to a criminal investigation against him under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, which can carry the death penalty.
Zuckerberg explained that the incident arose because “someone on Facebook had a picture where they had the drawing of the Prophet Muhammad, and someone said that’s blasphemy in our culture.” This led to legal proceedings in Pakistan, prompting him to avoid traveling to the country due to potential legal risks.
He emphasized the complexities tech companies face when navigating varying cultural norms and legal frameworks worldwide. “There are all these places around the world that just have different values… and want us to crack down on and ban way more stuff than I think a lot of people would believe is the right thing to do,” Zuckerberg noted.
