The food crisis in Sri Lanka has been drastically increased. The United Nations has appealed for aid on a large scale.
According to the United Nations, the food crisis in Sri Lanka is deepening as a large portion of the population is in dire need of humanitarian aid. The requirement in the bankrupted country has been doubled to more than 3 million.
The total population of Srilanka is 2.2 million. According to an estimation by the United Nations agencies in the month of June, 1.7 million people of the total population is in dire need of assistance.
United Nations agencies in Colombo stated in a joint statement that they have raised $79 million to provide food to those in need. They further said that they now need another $70 million to address the growing number of people in need.
According to the reports, the dramatic increase in food insecurity in Sri Lanka is due to two consecutive seasons of poor harvests, shortage of foreign exchange, and decline of domestic purchasing power.
