New York: Britain’s Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and her mother were involved in a “near-catastrophic car chase” involving paparazzi photographers, a representative for the prince said on Wednesday.
The incident happened after the couple had attended an awards ceremony in New York on Tuesday.
“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near-collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD [New York Police Department] officers,” the representative said.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the US partly because of what they described as intense media harassment.
Prince Harry has long spoken out about his anger about press intrusion, which he blames for the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, who was killed when her limousine crashed as it sped away from chasing paparazzi in Paris.
The couple were making their first public appearance together since the coronation of King Charles earlier this month.
They were accompanied by Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, at the Ms Foundation for Women’s 50th anniversary gala event in New York on Tuesday.
The ceremony honoured “game-changing” grantee partners and visionary leaders committed to the organisation’s mission of “advancing collective power and creating safe, just and equitable futures for women, girls, and gender-expansive people”.
