As the deadline given to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) by the Punjab government to hand over some 30-40 suspects involved in the May 9 violence expired, law enforcers have reportedly surrounded the Zaman Park residence of former premier Imran Khan.
The Punjab Police initiated the siege of the PTI chief’s residence yesterday, and it is still ongoing. In order to maintain control of the situation, the police have closed all roads leading to Zaman Park. Additionally, all camps of PTI workers outside the residence have been vacated.
Punjab Government’s Ultimatum and Potential Consequences
The Punjab government had previously demanded that the PTI hand over the suspects allegedly hiding at Zaman Park, following the May 9 violence. In a press conference, Amir Mir, the caretaker information minister, stressed that if the PTI refused to cooperate and hand over the “terrorists in Zaman Park” to the law enforcement agencies, the government would be compelled to take strict measures.
This development comes in the wake of significant damage caused to public property during the PTI protests. The Punjab government has estimated the damages to amount to Rs145 million. In an effort to bring those responsible to justice and restore order, the government issued the ultimatum to the PTI.
As tensions rise and the standoff continues, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize peaceful dialogue and resolution. The PTI leadership, law enforcement agencies, and the Punjab government must find common ground to address the concerns and allegations raised. It is essential to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is served while safeguarding the rights and safety of all individuals involved.
