In a stunning upset, Scotland has defeated West Indies by 7 wickets in the Super Six stage of the ICC World Cup qualifiers, dashing West Indies’ hopes of qualifying for the prestigious tournament.
After suffering defeats at the hands of Zimbabwe and the Netherlands in the group matches of the World Cup qualifiers, West Indies faced yet another setback when they lost to Scotland in a crucial match.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss in Harare, West Indies could only manage a meager total of 181 runs. Jason Holder remained the top scorer with 45 runs, while Rovman Powell contributed 36 runs. Scotland’s Brandon Mavuta claimed three wickets, denting West Indies’ innings.
Chasing a target of 182 runs, Scotland comfortably achieved the victory in the 44th over, losing only three wickets. Matthew Cross played an unbeaten knock of 74 runs, while Brendan Taylor scored 69 runs.
With this defeat, the two-time World Cup champions, West Indies, failed to qualify for the tournament for the first time. It was their third consecutive loss in the World Cup qualifiers, resulting in a missed opportunity to secure qualification.
The upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023 in India will be the first edition without the participation of West Indies.
