KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Murad Ali Shah on Monday was elected as Sindh chief minister for the third consecutive term after he secured a majority of votes in the Sindh Assembly.
Shah obtained 112 votes against his opponent, Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM-Pakistan) Ali Khursheedi, who only managed to get 36 votes.
The Sindh Assembly Monday voted to elect the province’s next chief minister after session began following a half-hour delay.
The assembly began its proceedings to elect the post of chief minister with Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) nominee Murad Ali Shah and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) Ali Khurshidi eyeing the position.
At the onset of today’s session, speaker Awais Qadir Shah administered the oath of newly-elected Sindh Assembly member Nadir Magsi who was unable to take his oath on Saturday.
The election for the province’s chief executive is to be carried out via open ballot with those supporting PPP’s Shah and MQMP’s Khurshidi directed to go right and left, respectively.
