Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has adopted a resolution demanding that the federal government declare former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto a national democratic hero. The resolution, passed during a seminar titled ‘Bhutto Reference and History’, also calls for Bhutto’s picture to be featured on currency notes.
The seminar, which focused on the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto reference, provided a platform for the PPP to reiterate its long-standing stance on the former prime minister’s legacy. The resolution praised the Supreme Court’s recent decision to acknowledge that Bhutto did not receive a fair trial, which ultimately led to his execution in 1979. This acknowledgment is seen as a significant vindication of Bhutto’s legacy, and the PPP is now pushing for further recognition of his contributions to Pakistani democracy.
The resolution goes on to demand that the federal government confer the title of “Quaid-e-Awam” (Leader of the People) on Bhutto, as well as award him the highest civilian honour, Nishan-e-Pakistan. This move is seen as an attempt to cement Bhutto’s place in Pakistani history as a champion of democracy and a symbol of resistance against military rule.
Bhutto’s execution in 1979, following a trial under the military regime of General Zia-ul-Haq, remains a contentious issue in Pakistani politics. The Supreme Court’s recent decision to acknowledge the unfairness of his trial has reopened old wounds and sparked a renewed debate about the country’s political past. The PPP’s resolution is likely to add fuel to this debate, with many expecting a strong response from other political parties and stakeholders.
