The interim government of Bangladesh has announced the cancellation of the August 15 holiday. Traditionally, this day has been observed as a national day of mourning, marking the anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s assassination on August 15, 1975.
According to Bangladeshi media, the Ministry of Public Administration has confirmed that the notification to cancel the holiday has been finalized. This move signifies a significant shift in the way the nation commemorates one of its most somber days.
Previously, Brigadier (R) Sakhawat Hussain, the Minister of Home Affairs in the interim government, stated that police would be deployed on August 15 to maintain law and order. The decision to revoke the holiday is seen as part of broader efforts to stabilize the country during this period of transition.
