Popular decisions in unpopular corona times
The decision to promote students of grade 10 and grade 12 without exams received mixed reactions. The decision was taken on September 13 in Islamabad by the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC), which was held under the chairmanship of the Federal Minister of Education, Shafqat Mehmood. It was said that all candidates throughout the country would be declared successful. Those who failed would be given grace marks and pulled up to the minimum pass marks level of 33 out of 100. According to the decision, all the Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEs) will announce the intermediate results on September 30. Similarly, all the BISEs will announce the matriculation results on October 16. The results will be sent through SMS and also uploaded on the websites of the education boards. All candidates would be declared successful because, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was not possible to arrange supplementary exams for failed cases. The unanimous decisions by the provincial education ministers were meant to be implemented. In 2022, the matriculation exams will be held in May and June. After the results thereof, the new educational session will begin in August. As stated above, the parents and teachers appeared divided about the IPEMC decisions. Some of them said that the decisions were ideal in the given circumstances. The others were rather skeptical. They thought that the education in the country was already in shambles. Under the pretext of the Covid-19 pandemic, the credibility of the crumbling education system was further being eroded. The coming days will judge the opinions being expressed in both camps.
