Aflatoxin Biocontrol Lab established at NARC
ISLAMABAD: In order to avoid the threats of Aflatoxin in agriculture sector and produce disease free crops, the first ever Aflatoxin Biocontrol Lab was established at National Agricultural Centre (NARC).
The aim of the lab was to produce safer food and disease free crops to ensure food security and safety in the country, said Dr Muhammad Azeem Khan, Chairman, Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC).
Addressing the inaugural ceremony held here, he said Aflatoxin was a serious threat to food security which could infect many of Pakistan’s agricultural products, including cereal grains, chilis, dry fruits and nuts and milk.
It is produced by a poisonous fungus, he said, adding the fungus could infect crops before and after harvest besides infecting animal products if infected feeds were given to livestock. – APP
