Newly-appointed Finance Minister Miftah Ismail announced on Thursday that he was leaving for Washington to hold talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in a bid to revive the stalled loan facility from the lending body.
The country’s finance czar took to microblogging website Twitter to announce the news.
“The purpose of the visit was to put back on track our IMF program that PTI and IK (Imran Khan) derailed, thus endangering our economy,” he said.
The finance minister will meet Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz supremo Nawaz Sharif in London to discuss matters pertaining the country’s economy among others.
Earlier on Wednesday, Miftah told the media that his priority was to secure a $1bn tranche from the IMF and prepare for the coming budget .
He will be meeting the IMF’s managing director, World Bank Chief Executive Officer, executive directors of the G-7 nations, ministers of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and China and the IMF mission chief to Pakistan.
