The prevalence of HIV in Pakistan has increased to alarming levels. According to the Federal Ministry of Health, thousands of cases are reported every month. About 9773 new cases of HIV have been reported in the country in the past ten months.
Officials have reported that the highest number of new HIV cases were reported in Punjab in the last 10 months, raising serious doubts about the prevention and control of the deadly disease. The federal and provincial governments have been conducting millions of HIV tests every month.
The highest monthly tally of HIV cases was recorded in the month of June. 74 people tested positive for the virus in PIMS Islamabad. Experts claim that HIV is spreading due to a lack of infection control among homosexuals and medical institutions. They also warn that if not controlled, HIV cases can reach millions, like hepatitis C.
How is HIV transmitted?
Before it was named HIV, the virus was known as GRID (Gays Related Immune Deficiency). The currently known Human Immune Deficiency Virus, HIV, is mainly transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse between people of the same gender.
According to research, homosexuality is responsible for 90 percent of HIV cases reported in the world. Among the cases that were not homosexual, the virus was transmitted either through blood transfusion, in about 78 percent of the cases, while 12 percent were fetal transmissions; the mothers were reportedly involved in homosexuality.
The approval of transgender rights in Pakistan has a major contribution to the alarming increase of the virus in Pakistan. The preponderance of HIV among homosexual and bisexual Pakistani men is reaching frightening proportions. Anything that goes against nature is surely going to cause problems.
