The Zu Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system has received an honorable mention at the Society for Technology in Anesthesia (STA) 2024 Annual Meeting, held in Houston, United States from January 11 to 14.
The STA is a prestigious international organization that promotes innovation and excellence in the use of technology for anesthesia and patient care. The honorable mention recognizes the Zu Peshawar BRT system as a world-class example of how technology can improve the quality of life and health of urban residents.
The Zu Peshawar BRT system, launched in August 2020, is the first of its kind in Pakistan. It consists of a 27-kilometer corridor with 30 stations, connecting the east and west ends of the city. The system runs a fleet of low-emission, electric-hybrid buses that operate on dedicated lanes, reducing traffic congestion and pollution. The system also features a network of feeder routes that cover 83 kilometers and 150 stops, making the BRT accessible from the densely populated areas of Peshawar. The system serves an average of 250,000 passengers per day, providing them with fast, reliable, and affordable transport.
The Zu Peshawar BRT system is not only a transport solution, but also a social and environmental one. The system offers priority facilities for women, the elderly, and people with disabilities, ensuring their safety and comfort. The system also promotes the use of bicycles, with 360 bikes available for rent at 32 stations. The system also integrates with the city’s health and education sectors, offering free rides to students and discounted fares to health workers. The system also supports the local economy, creating jobs and opportunities for vendors and service providers.
The Zu Peshawar BRT system was designed with the help of a pre-feasibility study conducted by the CDIA in 2014, which proposed a 20-year urban transport plan for Peshawar. The system was also inspired by the best practices of other BRT systems around the world, such as Bogota, Istanbul, and Guangzhou.
The honorable mention from the STA is a testament to the success and impact of the Zu Peshawar BRT system. The system has transformed the lives of millions of Peshawar residents, providing them with better mobility and access to socio-economic opportunities. The system has also set a benchmark for other cities in Pakistan and beyond, demonstrating how technology can be harnessed to create a sustainable and inclusive transport system.
