Pneumonia, a common respiratory infection that inflames the lungs, has become a serious health threat for children under five years old in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. According to the latest report from the Health Department, the province witnessed a staggering 47% increase in pneumonia cases during the last three months of 2023, affecting more than 11,000 children.
The report revealed that 6,219 pneumonia cases were reported in October, followed by 8,713 in November, and 11,551 in December. The majority of the cases were among male children, who accounted for 60% of the total. The districts of Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, and Abbottabad had the highest number of cases, while the districts of Chitral, Kohistan, and Torghar had the lowest.
Health experts have attributed the surge in pneumonia cases to the increased severity of cold weather in the region, which lowers the immunity of children and makes them more susceptible to the infection. They have also pointed out the lack of awareness and preventive measures among the parents and caregivers, who often neglect the symptoms of pneumonia and delay seeking medical attention.
Pneumonia can be caused by various bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and can lead to serious complications such as sepsis, lung abscess, or even death if left untreated. The common signs and symptoms of pneumonia include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, and fatigue. The infection can be prevented by following good hygiene practices, avoiding exposure to smoke and pollution, and getting vaccinated against the common causes of pneumonia.
The Health Department has urged the parents and caregivers to keep their children warm and dry when going outside, and to seek immediate medical help if they notice any signs of pneumonia. The department has also assured that it is taking all the necessary steps to provide adequate treatment and care for the affected children, and to prevent further spread of the infection.
