The Ministry of National Health Services has disclosed Pakistan’s first suspected case of monkeypox (MPX). According to an official statement, a citizen from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who recently returned from the Gulf region, exhibited symptoms of MPX. In response, health authorities immediately conducted tests, and the samples have been sent for confirmation.
Fortunately, the individual only displays mild symptoms. However, the authorities are taking no chances and have begun tracing and testing those who came into contact with the suspected patient. This proactive approach is crucial in containing any potential outbreak.
The Ministry’s spokesperson emphasized that all provinces have been instructed to appoint focal persons specifically for handling monkeypox cases. Additionally, the Border Health Services have been directed to enforce strict monitoring at all entry points into the country, ensuring no stone is left unturned in safeguarding public health.
It’s important to note that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the spread of a new strain of MPX in Congo and other parts of Africa as a global health emergency. Cases have been confirmed in both children and adults in several African countries, raising concerns worldwide.
