Former Sri Lankan cricketer Dileep Samarawera has been handed a 20-year ban by Cricket Australia from holding any position due to a serious violation of the code of conduct. This decision was made following allegations of inappropriate behavior involving a female cricketer from Cricket Victoria.
According to media reports, Cricket Australia’s Conduct Commission stated that Samarawera breached Section 2.23 of their code of conduct. The charges stem from accusations made by a female member of Cricket Victoria, claiming misconduct on the part of Samarawera during his time as a coach.
Samarawera, who represented Sri Lanka in 7 Test matches and 5 One Day Internationals between 1993 and 1995, now faces a serious blow to his coaching career. He had joined Cricket Victoria in 2008 as a batting specialist and was appointed interim head coach of the Women’s team in November of last year.
This situation serves as a stark reminder that misconduct will not be tolerated, regardless of one’s position or past achievements. Cricket Australia’s decision sends a clear message that ethical behavior and respect are paramount in the sport, both on and off the field.
