Indian police have arrested more than a dozen people after violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims during a Hindu religious procession in New Delhi, Indian media reported on Sunday.
“Remaining rioters are being identified for strict legal action,” the police posted through its official Twitter.
So far, no deaths have been reported from the incident.
A sharp spike in religiously motivated clashes has been witnessed in India in recent weeks where Hindu majority and Muslim minority groups have crossed swords over religious processions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stint in power has emboldened hardline Hindu religious groups in recent years.
Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has already said that “Fringe elements, who are unable to digest the peace and prosperity in the country, try to defame India’s inclusive culture and commitment”.
He has expressed concerns over rising intolerance among religious communities.
